Excalibur
The legendary wizard Merlin the Magician used his magic to cast Excalibur in stone, and proclaimed that only a person of royal lineage or ‘the true king’ would be able to pull the sword out.
A young boy of about 15 managed to pull the sword out and proved himself to be the ‘Divine Ruler’ enter, King Arthur!
King Arthur is associated with the mythical sword, The Excalibur, in most legends, which is often considered as a symbol of his divine kingdom and power.
In the Lady of the Lake story, Excalibur was supposedly made by an Avalonian elf and forged in dragon-fire. Even the sword sleeve of the Excalibur was supposedly magical in nature, as it prevented the wearer from losing blood in battle, ensuring victory.
Since medieval times, historians and academics have wrestled with the question of whether King Arthur was a real historical person, or a mythological figure.
If Henry II (a Plantagenet) had discovered Arthur’s grave and the mystical sword Excalibur, this would mark him as a heir to Arthur’s legacy and the power that Excalibur represented. The Plantagenets ruled England for over 300 years and remain the longest ruling family in England’s history. They were as great a legend as that of Arthur in their own right.
